Dental Hygiene and Oral Health

This topic deals with the practice of keeping mouth, teeth and gums healthy and clean in order to prevent a range of dental problems like tooth decay, gum disease and dental erosions. A poor hygiene of mouth, particularly gum disease increases the risk of heart stroke, uncontrolled diabetes and preterm labor.  The responsibility of dental hygienist includes cleaning teeth, examines gums and educates their patients on oral care techniques which in turn make your mouth looks and smells healthy.  Duties of dental hygienists include

  • Using devices like scrapers and polishers for removing tartar, plaque, and stains
  • Applying preventative treatments such as fluoride and sealants
  • Taking and developing X-rays of the mouth
  • Record findings while cleaning and report information to the dentist
  • Assisting the dentist during procedures with tasks like giving anesthesia and removing sutures
